The Shar Pei dog is an ancient breed, believed to have originated in China about 200 b.c. originally used for hunting and guarding. They became popular fighting dogs but fell out of favor after the introduction of larger breeds from the West.
They are a short-coated medium-sized breed of dog, renowned for its excessively wrinkled skin. The breed resembles many dog breeds from the mastiff family; however, it is most closely related to spitz breeds, with the Chow Chow being its closest relative. Today, Shar Pei are considered good family dogs but wary of strangers.
Some dog breeds get persistently stereotyped as dangerous, aggressive, and threatening. Because of those stereotypes, many cities now ban specific dog breeds across the United States. Shar Pei are banned in Mississippi and Utah.
