PUPPIES ARE BORN BLIND AND DEAF AS AN EVOLUTIONARY STRATEGY. Canines survive in the wild by hunting, and being pregnant slows down hunting mothers. Birthing puppies early (after a gestation period of approximately two month) is an evolutionary strategy that allows mothers to keep their pups in a den and get back to hunting more quickly. When puppies are born, many of their critical organs are not fully formed ― for example, they are born with their eyelids shut, which protects their still-developing eyes. Puppies begin to see and hear about one to two weeks post birth.
