Happy President’s Day!
President Abraham Lincoln (1861-1865) was the first president to bring CATS into the White House.
His cats Tabby and Dixie were gifts from his Secretary of State. Lincoln once rescued three motherless kittens while visiting General Grant during the Civil War. He regularly played with his cats to relieve stress during his presidency.
Though our first president, President George Washington (1789-1797) had 36 hounds, they did not live in the White House because construction of the building was incomplete at the time.
In the year 1800, with construction of the White House nearly complete, our second president, President John Adams (1797-1801) and First Lady Abigail Adams moved in along with Abigail’s two mixed-breed pups, Juno and Satan.
